How meter affects the answer
At 120 BPM in 4/4, eight bars contain 32 quarter-note beats and last 16 seconds. Change the count to three beats per bar and the same eight bars last 12 seconds.
Compound meters need care because a DAW may display BPM against dotted-quarter beats while you count six or twelve eighth notes. Match “beats per bar” to the beat represented by your BPM value. This calculator assumes a constant tempo and does not include tempo automation.
