Why the result is a range

Spotify does not pay one fixed price for every stream. It allocates royalties using streamshare: a rightsholder's share of eligible streams within a market and month determines its share of that royalty pool.

The effective average changes with listener country, Premium versus ad-supported listening, platform revenue, and the agreement between the artist and their label or distributor. That is why this calculator shows low, typical, and high estimates instead of presenting one number as guaranteed income.

For the most accurate assumption, replace the default rates with your own effective rate from a recent distributor statement. Spotify's official royalties guide explains how streamshare and rightsholder payments work.

Recorded and publishing royalties

Recording royalties belong to the owner of the master recording and normally reach an artist through a distributor or record label.

Publishing royalties belong to songwriters and composition rightsholders. They flow through publishers, performance-rights organizations, mechanical agencies, and other collection partners.

An independent artist who wrote and owns the recording may be entitled to both sides, but they arrive through different paths. This calculator focuses on the recording-side estimate because publishing depends on additional territory, registration, ownership, and collection details.

How much does Spotify pay per stream?

Spotify does not set a fixed per-stream rate. Third-party estimates often use roughly $0.003 to $0.005 per stream, but the effective average changes by market, listener plan, month, and rights agreement.

Do tracks below 1,000 streams earn Spotify royalties?

For recording royalties, Spotify requires a track to have at least 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months and meet an undisclosed minimum unique-listener threshold. The rule is checked per unique recording and does not currently change publishing royalty calculations.

Are monthly listeners the same as streams?

No. A monthly listener is a unique person who listened during the rolling 28-day window, while streams count qualifying plays. One listener can generate multiple streams.

Does this calculator include distributor and label cuts?

Yes, use the rights-share field to estimate what remains after a percentage split. It does not model flat subscription fees, withdrawal fees, taxes, publishing, or every contract-specific deduction.

Can this calculator predict my exact payout?

No calculator can know the exact payout before your official statement because Spotify uses market-level streamshare rather than a fixed price per play. Use this as a planning range, then replace the assumptions with your own historical rate.
